Our Brief History
.
Protect New York emanates from State University of New York multi-campus "Conversation in the Disciplines" held on September 29, 2005, at the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government in Albany, NY, on the topic "Scholarship in Homeland Security: Exploring the Intellectual Territory." The conference was organized by Ernest Sternberg of the University at Buffalo with collaborators Thomas A. Birkland of the University at Albany and Lester Paldy of Stony Brook University. It was attended by 24 academic participants, predominantly from the State University of New York system. (A compilation of papers presented at this conference appears in the Journal of Security Education in fall 2006.) In the final session, participants proposed the setting up of an ongoing educational and research organization. An organizational listserv was launched BY John Kostanoski of SUNY Farmingdale in November 2005. The organization's foundational meeting was held in Brooklyn on April 24, 2006.
