Our Logo & Web Site Our logo depicts the laurel tree, with upstate and downstate New York scenes in the background. In classical and medieval iconology, the laurel refers to safety, security, and protection from disaster. In addition, the laurel branch refers to intellectual accomplishment and excellence, as suggested by the terms "poet laureate" and "baccalaureate." Our logo therefore symbolizes the role of academic excellence in the protection of New York State.
